Samburu National Reserve is approximately 332.2km North-East of Nairobi. Therefore, because of the distance, you cannot manage to go and then return on the same day. Therefore, you can opt to camp there for a couple of days.

Why Samburu?

1. Weather

Samburu is an arid area just like most of the counties in that region. Therefore, the place is constantly sunny. If you want to escape the unpredictable Nairobi weather, Samburu is a place you can enjoy a different atmosphere. The park is adjacent to another called the Buffalo springs and both parks are served by the mighty Ewaso Nyiro River which is seasonal but very important to the ecosystem.

2. Game Drives

The park is endowed with the big five apart from rhinos. The animals you will see as you drive through are elephants, lions, leopards, giraffes and many other animals. The roads in the park are dry and you can be comfortable in the fancy landcruisers, vans or even buses if you are in the company of other people.

3. Samburu Culture

The people of Samburu are still endowed in their traditional culture. The houses are still traditionally built. You will see Samburu warriors dressed in special types of attires. The women outfit is characterized with different types of beads and it is just magnificent.

4. Camping

If you are enthusiastic about camping and just waking up to the stars, Samburu National reserve gives you that opportunity. You can set up your tent, fetch the readily available firewood and cook your own meals. You can camp by the Ewaso Nyiro River. There is a warden's camp nearby. Also, you can stay in one of the public lodges in the park, private lodges just outside the park such as Sasaab Lodge. I will do about lodges in another article.

5. Swimming

There is a public lagoon at the buffalo springs where you can cool yourself after a tiresome walk in the park. That is the only public place you can swim. However, the surrounding lodges have well furnished swimming pools that you can enjoy.

Different tour operators such as Merry and memories organize for trips to this place more than often, you can pick one which suits your budget and you can have the fun.
